President’s Report

We are now over halfway through the year, and what a month July was for the Club! We’ve had Senior players competing internationally, competitions for our U12s, U16s and U18s, training camp for our U12s and U14s and Flippa Ball starting up for Term 3.

Eight of our Club members were in Gwangju, Korea for the FINA World Championships – Grace and Emmerson in the Women’s team, Nick, Anton, Sean, Sid and Davor with the Men’s team and Zach as a video analyst. Well done to all of you for representing your Club and country with pride. We are glad to have you safely back in New Zealand.

There has been plenty of action in the pool over the last four weeks! The Under 16s have kicked off their Auckland League season, and we ran another successful training camp in the first week of the holidays – thanks to Jemma Chase who did an excellent job running this. Well done to our Under 18 teams who finished off their season with the National Championships over the school holidays. The Jelly Belly tournament provided another fun weekend of water polo topped off by our Gold team taking out the B grade!

This term will look a little different for us as a Club, as we temporarily shift our trainings to EGGS when West Wave closes in September. Deb, Andrew and Adam have done a great job organising these training with limited space, and we appreciate your patience and understanding through this period. All things going well, West Wave will re-open for the start of November.

Finally, you may have seen New Zealand Water Polo conducting a survey of athletes and parents regarding your club experience. Thanks to those of you who completed the survey – this information will filter back to the committee and is incredibly valuable in our decision making and planning for the future of the Club.

Under 12s at Jelly Belly!

The annual Jelly Belly competition was held by North Harbour in mid July, with two Waitakere Under 12 teams competing. Congratulations to both teams, who came 1st (Gold) and 11th (Teal) in their respective grades!

The Teal team beat the Marist Orcas in their final game to finish 11th in the C Grade. They finished 3rd in their pool, losing narrowly (5-6) to Sea Wolf before beating Marist twice in the playoff rounds. Well done to all the players, coaches Hannah and Hamish and manager Lauren.

The Gold team finished second in their pool, losing only one game to the Atlantis Tridents. They beat the North Harbour Jellyfish 3-2 in their semi-final for a chance at redemption against Atlantis for the Gold medal. Applying everything they had learnt in the previous games, the Waitakere Gold won that game 3-1 to take out the grade! Well done to all the players, coaches Amy and Emily and manager Linda, and congratulations to Lucas Wilson who was named boys MVP.

A huge thank you to all of our coaches and managers for their time and effort throughout the weekend!
