Vice President’s Report

We are nearing the end of Term 3, and have had yet another busy term at Waitak. Firstly, thanks to everyone for accommodating the alternative training venues while West Wave is closed. We have teams training all over Auckland including at EGGS, MAGS, Teps and even a few sessions at the NAC. The fitness trainings for the U14s and U16s at West Wave are well under way.

One of the biggest announcements in youth sport was released recently with 5 of the biggest codes issuing a joint commitment to “take a stand to bring the fun and development focus back to sport for all young people.” New Zealand Water Polo has indicated their support for the initiatives. This statement has certainly generated some interesting conversations – and I am sure they will continue for some time to come, with 85% of our membership being Under 18.

Here are some of the things that have been going on at the Club:

October Holiday Camp Sept 30th – Oct 4th
These holidays we are running the camp from EGGS. Registrations are now open. These are always very popular so get in fast – click here for more info.

U16 Auckland League
This year we have teams in Div 1 and Div 2 for both boys and girls playing in the U16 Auckland League, and we are now into the final rounds, before Nationals which start the first week of the school holidays. Good luck to all the players!

Intermediate League and AIMS
The West Wave closure meant we needed to bring our league forward a few weeks. The final was between Pasadena and Glen Eden with Pasadena taking out the title. Both teams then headed down to Tauranga for the AIMS Games, another fantastic showcase of junior sport. This year water polo had 37 teams competing from intermediate schools around New Zealand. Congratulations to Pasadena who made it all the way to the final of the open grade, coming home with a silver medal.

Looking forward to next month and beyond
The U12s have their last tournament of the year this coming weekend.  We have 3 teams competing and they have all come such a long way this year. We wish them the best of luck. U14 season kicks off  the beginning of Term 4 – this year we have 2 girls teams and 3 boys teams competing.

Thanks for your help
Clubs only survive because of the many hours of time volunteers put in. The committee is busy working behind the scenes to make sure we not only survive but also thrive. We also greatly appreciate everyone who contributes to our Club – from managing teams, to helping out at the holiday camps. Thank you thank you thank you!

Year 7 & 8 League Finals

The 2019 Western Year 7 & 8 Water Polo League finals were held at West Wave in early August. Congratulations to Pasadena A, who remained undefeated to claim the Division 1 title, and Henderson Intermediate who managed to hold on through a penalty shootout to clinch the Division 2 title from Blockhouse Bay!

In the bronze finals, Liston College took the win over Pasadena B for Div 1 while Pasadena’s C team was more successful in the Div 2 match, edging out Glen Eden B. Well done to the individual award winners and scholarship recipients from both divisions. The full results can be reviewed on our website (click below).

A huge thank you must go to all of our coaches, managers, parents and referees who have given up a significant amount of their time to support the league this year. Best of luck for the rest of the Year 7 & 8 competitions coming up this year!
