Blue Diamonds Qualify for Semis

With the final round robin match-ups of the Honda National Water Polo League being played over the weekend, the Blue Diamonds are heading into the finals series in second seed, claiming nine wins from twelve games.

In an extremely tight men’s competition, the Blue Devils haven’t been as successful. Despite an outstanding performance that saw them take down defending champions North Harbour, the Devils finish in 5th position and won’t progress to the medal matches.

Both the semi-finals and finals will be played this weekend, all at Diocesan School for Girls. The Blue Diamonds will take on Tauranga at 3:15 on Saturday for a spot in the final. The Diamonds have beaten Tauranga twice in the regular rounds, 24-23 at home and 12-5 at Baywave, however the Bay of Plenty women still pose a significant threat. Sunday’s game will see the girls take on either North Harbour or Atlantis City to claim their final placing.

Emmerson Houghton, Grace Tobin and Brogan Houghton remain in the top 10 goal scorers of the women’s league, with Grace and Emmerson sitting in the top two spots. The strength of the Diamond’s line up has been affirmed this week, with the announcement of national teams that sees Libby Gault join a long list of Waitakere women to wear the fern. Liana Dance, returning to New Zealand from several seasons of water polo in Europe, has made her debut for the Diamonds and is already making her mark on the scoreline.

See you all this weekend – don’t forget to wear your Waitak colours!
