2nd Place for Lobsters at Water Polo on the Waterfront
Congratulations to the Waitak Lobsters who placed 2nd at Tauranga’s inaugural Water Polo on the Waterfront competition last weekend!
Water Polo on the Waterfront is the first event of its kind in New Zealand, with players taking to the ocean in front of Tauranga's Tidal Steps. 120 players from around the North Island came to compete against not only one another but the challenges of an ocean based playing field. Spectators were encouraged to come and enjoy the sport with a lively atmosphere supported by good weather, food trucks, music and match commentary.
The Lobsters team, made up of Blue Devils Anton Sunde, Sid Dymond, Sean Newcombe, Scott Logan and Hamish Bonnar, walked away with $500 in prize money after losing 5-8 to the Sharks in the gold medal match. According to WPOTWF organisers, the competition will return in 2020, with the goal of opening the event up to female or mixed teams.
Well done to Tauranga Water Polo for successfully running this much needed event and helping to raise the profile of water polo in New Zealand. We look forward to seeing it come back back next year!
