Under 16 Nationals Wrap Up
The 2019 season is over for our Under 16 players, with four teams competing in the National Championships last week.
It’s been a long season for these players, with pre-season training starting in Term 1, and many players taking part in our Under 18 programs and/or high school teams. The Auckland League began in Term 3, with the final games wrapping up just before nationals. The girls and boys Gold teams and Teal boys finished 7th, while the Teal girls did one better to finish 6th.
Four teams competed in Nationals, including some Under 14 players to fill out the Teal squads and gain some valuable experience heading into their Auckland League. The Gold girls narrowly missed out on making top 8, but went on to prove themselves by winning the 9-12 bracket to take home the plate. The Gold boys also made it to the plate final, beating Otago to take on Marist Red. Despite having played some strong quarters against Marist in the Auckland League, it wasn’t their day, with a loss seeing them finish 10th.
The Teal girls played exceptionally in their pool rounds, coming away with two wins and a draw. However, having too many Under 14 players meant they couldn’t progress through to the top 8. Competing in the 9-12 bracket, they finished 10th as runners up to the plate. The Teal boys team was also a young squad, who finished 11th with a great win over Sea Wolf to finish the tournament.
Well done to all of the players, and a huge thank you to our coaches, managers and parent helpers! We look forward to seeing you back in the pool next year.
