Farewell Dani!

Tonight we say good bye to Daniel (Dani) Cercols. Dani's achievements with Waitak will be with us for a long time to come and will never be forgotten.

Dani was named MVP of the New Zealand Water Polo Men's National League while playing for the Waitakere Blue Devils and alongside this commitment as a player, he was also the assistant coach of our Senior Women's Team who won Gold in the Woman's National League (read more about it here).

Waitakere Blue Diamonds National Champions for the first time

The Waitakere Blue Diamonds have won their first national women’s title since 1993, and their first-ever NZWPNL win, 8-7 over double defending champs Marist Magic. The Blue Diamonds dug deep in the third quarter, that started with a six-on-five goal to young gun Libby Alsemgeest in the middle after a pass in from Emmerson Houghton. They’d eventually score another three goals (Emmerson Houghton 2, Zuniga) to Magic’s two (Nicole Lewis, Tate Renata) to take the score to 6-6 heading into the last quarter.

“After world champs I had been approached by a club from Montenegro, but Goran helped me get a trial with my current club. After that, it was up to me to show them who I am.” he said.

It was all go from there, he’s now in the team’s starting line up as a centre forward, as well as boasting the titles of the youngest paid player in the team and the youngest foreign player in the entire Turkish League. An impressive CV for an 18-year-old player from Green Bay High School, but you won’t catch him shouting it from the rooftops.

Stankovich hits late penalty to secure rare win for New Zealand

Best mates Downie, Stankovich and Troy Amstrong first played together in 2010 as part of the Glen Eden Intermediate boys team and are now crucial members of team New Zealand.

In their fourth match of the tournament, New Zealand led by as much as four earlier in the match as the kiwis jumped out to a 5-1 lead late in the first quarter.

However, China clawed their way back into the match, only for Stankovich to have the last say.
